Why God made my mother

My mom and dad
For some reason I have been a bit reflective this mother's day weekend over most years.  I have a lot of reasons to be thankful for my mom as she has taught me so many things.    When I was a child she spoke a lot of whimsical sayings into my life that apparently are unique to only our family.  Like...

..."We'll worry about that tomorrow, and if tomorrow doesn't come, we don't have to worry about it."  Or this one..."If everything in life was as easy as doing the dishes, then we wouldn't have any problems." Neither one really resonated with me.  Because I learned worry from my mom and I grew up hating to do the dishes.  In fact, I believe in owning a dishwasher before buying plates.  Dishes are serious work.

God makes mothers with the nature to nurture.  God made her to take care of me, the youngest of three.

My mom has taught me many things like how to make melt-in-your-mouth homemade rolls and to be patient when sewing a dress seam for the third time (my first dress literally fell apart at every seam).  The fancy footwork of beating boys at kickball, Hide-N-Seek and Kick the can (Remember those games you play outdoors?).  She taught me a love of beets, the art of spitting watermelon seeds, and how to make meringue (I still can't do that last one).

She taught me to cook a birthday cake out of a dutch oven, how to roast a perfectly burnt marshmallow and where to touch a tent to make it leak.  The best entertainment for a man on a camping trip is a hand saw.   That kept my dad busy cutting wood for the campfire for hours.

She taught me that an angel food cake with sprinkles makes for really special days, and that Midge only needed Barbie and Ken as close doll friends.  She showed me we had our name on the same church pew on Sundays and that we be in place each and every time the doors were open, rain, sun, sleet, or snow just like the USPS.

She taught me faithfulness, a hard work ethic, and loyalty while working three jobs at once.  She cleaned my messes at the daily dinner table as I spilled my drink and my tears.  She would open her kitchen to the neighbors kids and give them cookies and sandwiches.  She taught me how to be fair, as I missed recess because I wouldn't eat one bite of that yucky canned plum business.  (Why would you ever put a plum in a can?)

She taught me to how to overcome during her season of breast cancer quieting the fear of that dreadful disease.  She taught me how to be pretty when she made the extra effort to get the extra wide shoes for my little chubby foot.  She taught me kindness in the face of cruelty from those who picked on me in school.  She taught me to look up when you didn't know which direction to go.  God will always show me and remind me that I am special.  She educated me in the school of nature with the birds and the stars.  She showed me the power of prayer.

I will remember my mom for how she taught me generosity.   She gave so much of herself to others that she never got on the to-do list herself.  She is slowing down some as she quilts and she spends most of her days watching her favorite baseball game on TV, her favorite team being whatever game is on at the moment.

She taught me compassion with a pair of Red Ball Tennis shoes.   She showed me how to be a mother.  She showed me unconditional love.  She welcomed me with my fears and failures.  She showed me the face of Jesus.  Generously and that's something I will treasure forever.

That's why God made my mother, to mother me.  I love you mom.

Monday Mania - Socks and Such

I am starting a sock revolution.  Not many are adopting it though.  Some of you think I am crazy for wearing two different colors of socks with my Toms shoes.  Guess...what?  It's just what I do.  It's my personality emerging from my feet.  Really, it's just that I am too lazy to match my socks out of the dryer.  So most days, I grab the two socks on top of the sock stack and my world of socks is revolutionized.

The past two weekends The House FM has been collecting turkeys for the Salvation Army.  It's been hard work but rewarding.  One comment made was..."I have been in a place where I needed this help.  I want to give back as I had been given."  The lady said that as she put two turkeys into the shopping cart.  That warmed my heart to see her live compassion.  I love seeing God move through his people to take care of those who need a little extra help.  Thanks everyone who gave back to Turkey 4 Tunes.

There have been some significant changes that have blown through my life.  I have spent a lot of time praying and pondering God's word to me regarding those changes.  Isn't it wonderful the way God speaks to you just as you need to hear it?

Not sure what Andy is looking at.
Hope you have had a chance to catch the new morning show on The House FM radio station:  Wake Up! with Andy & Janelle.  Andy and I post pins to Pinterest daily so you don't miss any important information that we talk about, including cats.  Yup, they make our show often.  The name of the show is not only for the time of day, but also a call to discipleship as the children of God to wake up and be the church as God has called us to be.

A truth that I landed on again this past week is... we can't trust God in areas where we have our own plan or agenda in place.  He can and will direct your steps, your tomorrows, your next moves.  Proverbs 3: 5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight."

Some encouragement that I have received lately is through some dear friends who have sent me to my own words as encouragement.  I am amazed at how God can use this broken, desperate, and looking-for-answers writer to reach you.

Thank you for reading today.  For fun...wear some socks that don't match.  :)

Five Minute Friday - Give

Give it all away
We give of our time, talents, and our finances.  We give blood.  We give thanks at Thanksgiving and at Christmas we give gifts.  We are a giving people. Some people are very generous, some are stingy.  Some just give to impress.  Some give to honor God.

Luke 21:1 tells us one who gave it all.  The poor widow came to give a gift to the temple treasury.  Jesus was there with his disciples watching, as many came to give alms.  The woman simply offered her best, two very small copper coins.  She didn't make a big deal about giving.

From what she had, she gave it all.  She gave it all away.

Luke 21: 4 "All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

With it being so small was it significant?  The widow gave it all which is in contrast to the way most of us handle our money.  When you consider the tithe, we are returning a portion of it back to God through the church.  But if we give a certain percentage of our income and consider that a great accomplishment, do we resemble those who gave "out of their great wealth"?

The widow gave, but she gave extravagantly.  That's admirable.  That's honorable.  That's giving an offering.  That's giving like none other.  That's giving like Jesus.  That's giving it all away.

How do you give?
