Treat yourself with a little kindness today

Confession:  "I'm not taking off weight fast enough!"  After all it seemed like I gained it overnight. One day I woke up and was 30 lbs heavier than I was the last time I weighed.  Talk about a bombshell...that I saw between my toes.

Have you ever thought...you have been doing the work, watching the calories, sweating, and now it seems you can't even lose weight right?

How about you treat yourself with a little kindness today.

It's not just about making the right and healthy food choices or putting in time at the gym.  It's also not about eliminating certain problem foods.  Your mental state has a huge influence on whether you hit your weight-loss goals. Old thought patterns might seem unbreakable, but moving forward may be easier than you think. These negative thoughts could be what's holding you back from success.

Here's how I know.  I have been right where you are right now.  I wanted to give up and almost did.

Then God kick started my motivation with a pair of tight pants.  I was so ashamed being out of breath when wearing those tight jeans.

For one who has been overweight most of her life, yes, I know the tight jean feeling.  This is where you run and grab your hanky.  My story is not pretty, but it is pretty much a story of God's rescue.  I felt that I had to get to the end of myself before I realized I couldn't do this losing weight gig on my own.  Plus I felt like a loser most of the time at every meal, on every day.

The kicker was I had already lost 104 lbs. and now gained 30 of them back.  Ouch!  That day of reckoning hit hard and I was ashamed.  How could I let this happen?

So as I squeezed myself into those tight jeans, the rejection that I felt was enough to push me over the line of commitment and say...."this is it!"  Sept. 24, 2012 was a brand new day for me as I gathered up my resolve and gave myself another chance.  I put my love of food aside one more time before God and didn't look back.  I decided in my heart to honor Him with every bite.

I decided to start.

I started towards change, a new beginning.  Again.  My remorse was a catalyst in change.

In this case, my negative feelings spurred my positive move.  If you are needing a little kindness today, just look at what you have been running to for comfort for your rejected heart.  Make a list the food choices you make.  Are they what you are supposed to be eating?  And are you measuring your foods, what about the portion size?  Are you assuming you know what a 1/2 cup of orange juice looks like?   Do you know how much fat is in the fat free salad dressing?

These are hard questions I had to ask myself too and it helped to start writing everything down.

Everything.

This was my kindness effort to myself.  After seeing what I really eating and how much, it was obvious of why I had gained 30 lbs.

Kindness...give yourself a little today why don't you?  Prepare for healthy meals, snack times, get some fresh air, and give yourself a chance to succeed.

Health psychologist and Stanford lecturer Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., explains, "If you focus on self-criticism, you'll be like a laser on it." Instead of focusing on putting yourself down, draw attention toward what you want to fix and accomplish. Above all else, treat yourself with kindness.

Picture the new you...I know you don't even want to imagine it but you can do it....come on...dream a little.  I know it's hard to fathom the new you right now.  Feeling confident about your ability to succeed is a start, but an action plan can be a huge help too. You might not be able to find the words right now, but creating a tangible reminder, like a healthy Pinterest board covered in inspirational images, will help you start to recognize what your dreams look like.  Maybe you just need to write a few kind words to yourself.

Treat yourself with a little kindness today and celebrate your success, each and everyone.  Just start...your successes will feed your confidence.  Did you know that second chances are God's specialty?

God hasn't given up on you when you give up on you.

Once the positive changes start happening...it's like the domino effect.  It motivates you to keep going.  The hard work, the sweat, the tears, the struggles, are worth the end result.  Kindness works.

This weekend I was overwhelmed with gladness as I purged my closet of clothes that were too big. I treated myself with a little kindness and got rid of the reminders of the clothes that use to reject me.  No more safety nets, no going back to focusing on the the rejection.  Moving forward with kindness and knowing God's goodness, I have a positive outlook on each and every choice.

If I can do it, so can you.

"Kind words heal and help; cutting words wound and maim."  Proverbs 15:4 (MSG)

Are there negative thoughts about your weight that have held you back in the past? How did you move past these mental roadblocks and welcome the new you?

The Middle

My human reasoning fails me every time when it comes to understanding some of this life as I know it.  And there are times when I realize that my failures feed off my own human reasoning.  There are some days that I would like to think I am somewhat intelligent, but then I am knocked off my feet with my lack of comprehension in response to many of life's circumstances.  Especially when it comes to the senseless loss of human life.

I have to remember that these circumstances passed through God's hands first.
"This is my doing."  1 Kings 12:24

There is a lot about living this life that we are called to that I just don't get.  Seriously.  It is beyond my human thinking-with-both-sides-of-my-small-girl-brain some days.  The other day, as I was scratching my head in confusion and questions, I just accepted the fact that I don't have what it takes to be a Mensa   There are days that I simply don't get it.

My mind wants to just meltdown into a muddled mass of nothingness so that my brain will stop hurting.

And there is one thing I will never, ever, get...when cancer strikes.

How do you understand that horrific illness or disease or the after effects of any kind of devastation?

God gets it.

When I want to cling to my own understanding, I have to revert back to a memorized proverb that comforted me on my white-knuckled-hang-on-tightly-to-Jesus chemo-surgery-chemo-radiation-chemo bobsled ride with my husband.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight."  Proverbs 3:5-6

How do you understand pain?  How do you accept cancer?  How does long term illness wear on you?  How about the painful loss of a family member?

I only know of one way to understand these difficult times....acknowledging God.

Through it all, I have to continually look to My Father who's mind is greater than mine.  And who's comprehension of my life's agenda is grander than my small thoughts.  I have to dismiss my why questions and just acknowledge the fact that there are many situations and circumstances in my plan B that I will not have full understanding of until I see Jesus.

Pretty sure that when I am looking full on into His eyes of compassion...
I'll forget my silly questions.

When things don't make sense, when your head hurts from trying to put human reason to a God ordained day, when your heart is about to explode or implode...
with emotional pain
that
cuts
you
deeply...

...acknowledge God.

We are on the biggest trust walk ever.  Hang on tightly to the only One you can trust when you don't get it.  Let Jesus calm your inner raging questions.
Let God pat your sorrowed soul.
Acknowledge God.

Not just when things are going good or problem free.
Not just when your tears dry up.
Not just when your nerves are numb.
Not just when you are hurting and you don't know which way is what.

In.all.of.your.ways.  All of them.
All your thoughts...
actions...
words...
Acknowledge God.

Peace comes.....

Five Minute Friday [Wisdom]

Einstein was a genius!

Solomon asked for one thing...wisdom.
God gave him wisdom more than riches.

Solomon was sought out by the wise for his wisdom.
He wrote inspired wisdom in Proverbs.

Wisdom is at the heart of God.

David was wise to seek God's heart.  Wisdom lives there.
It starts with the fear of the Lord.  See Proverbs 111:10

Wisdom is hidden inside His.

Paul prayed for wisdom and understanding.  Not only for himself but for others. Because he knew where it was kept and experienced it's worth.
By doing so, he lived a life worthy of the gospel.
Paul lived a life that pleased God.
In praying for wisdom, he produced, grew in knowledge and gained strength, faith, trust, endurance, patience, peace, and joy.

Wisdom is knowledge and understanding.
Seeking wisdom is the wise thing to do.
Wisdom is relevant, keeps God close and it keeps us close to God.
It is something to discover, uncover, and recover.
It calms and restores fractured faith.

Where is wisdom?  Start in Proverbs...it's wise reading.

Such a Hoot!

Have you ever wondered why the owl is the universal symbol for wisdom? This mug to the right must be for a uber-Mensa coffee addict. Look at him.... sitting so pretty on his stack-o- books. In this life, where successes are measured in your IQ and credit scores, I don't really get this wisdom connection of an owl, sitting on a stack of books on a coffee mug. Perhaps I am over-thinking this.

Who of you lacks wisdom? Um…that would be me. It's been said that there are wise people. Reality tells me it’s a little more elusive than that. Maybe I need one of these owl coffee mugs. Truth is we need to do is ask God for it. But first, we must humble ourselves and fear God. We must worship Him as our Holy God instead of considering Him our “homeboy”.

I’ve always said it’s better to be smarter than to be richer because if you were smarter the “rich” part would eventually come. But lately, I have been challenged to seek true wisdom. Solomon was the richest and smartest man in the world according to the Bible. I wonder how long he thought about his one request that God would grant? It seems an obvious choice.

Proverbs says wisdom is better that gold. We certainly have a need for more wisdom with the decisions that have to made on a daily and sometimes hourly basis. We make our decisions and our decisions make us. How many times have you made a list of the pros and cons about a big decision you had to make? If you are like me, the pros plus prayer give weight to the right choice.

But wisdom is really not about the pros and the cons but it’s about what our Creator and Sustainer says is best.

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver! Proverbs 16:16

Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7

One who lacks wisdom is a fool. Now that might seem a little harsh...but..

Fools act before they think….open mouth insert foot. We’ve all done that. Wise people think before they act; fools don't—and even brag about their foolishness. Proverbs 13:16 NLT

Fools spend all they earn. Spending paycheck to paycheck sound familiar? Most of us need some "plastic" surgery according to Dave Ramsey. In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has. Proverbs 21:20

Fools hurt those they love. Guilty as charged. The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down. Proverbs 14:1
Fools think they know it all….news flash…we don’t. Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others. Proverbs 12:15 NLT

So how you get wisdom? It’s as easy as 1..2…3!

Fear God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10

Ask God. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

Hang out with wise people. He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. Proverbs 13:20

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver! Proverbs 16:16

So what are you waiting for…what am I waiting for? Fear God, pray for wisdom, get wisdom, obey! Proverbs 31 day challenge starts now!
