Silent preparation

There are some of you who are asking some big questions of God right now.

Maybe you have a lot of unanswered prayers like Zechariah and Elizabeth did.  Check out their story in Luke 1.  It's a beautiful telling of God's answer in the middle of their mess.

When we read the wonderful stories of the Bible, especially the pretty story of Christmas we forget that these people are just ordinary people living their lives, regular Janes and Joes doing life, doing the work that God has called them to.

We forget.  Until we take another look at their story behind the veil of words.  That's just a fancy way of saying, reading between the lines of the unwritten part of their hearts, the parts that the Holy Spirit teaches to your spirit.

I would be unprepared if I ignored the words that weren't written.

We pick up the story in the middle of those days where priests had it all together, and took their turn at living holy lives in the the middle of their doubts, fears, and tears.

Yes, I said tears.

What does that have to do with preparing for Christmas?  Well, I don't know about where you are in this preparing season of Advent but today in the middle of these days, God has some undoing to do.

I just had one of the biggest emotional confessions before a dear friend and God that I've had in a while.  I realized something in my tears.

One..that our tears sometimes fill in for the silence of our hearts and no matter what, how many or how long, God understands and catches each and every one.

Two...when God calls you to show up to the calling He has given you, there is some preparing that needs to be undone before He can bring new birth into your doing.

Zechariah and Elizabeth were quite the model couple of strength through all these years of service to God.  On this certain day recorded in Luke 1, Zechariah's ministry was at an all time high.  It was his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to offer sweet incense at the altar, laying before a Holy God the concerns of his people.

Zechariah had prayed for this day.  I would venture to guess that he even dreamed about how this day would go down his own prayer journal.  What an honor to pray for the problems and concerns of the people, and that he would have all the right words flowing from his compassionate heart.  His big break came, at last he was before God, and behind the veil of prayers.

Elizabeth, his strong-supportive-solid-prayer-warrior-rock, was on the sidelines praying too.  With confidence, he enters the secret place of the temple, prepared with just the right gumption in his heart.

I haven't even addressed the unspoken needs relating to Elizabeth's barren state that might have been on the forefront of Zechariah's heart.  Think about this, if you knew you were going to meet God with your most raw and open prayers, knowing by the public approval that your prayers would be heard by a Holy God, be honest, wouldn't you say a little prayer for your deepest need too?

Or is that just me?

Zechariah was unprepared for what was about to happen.  Something holy occurred as the cloud of incense made way for an angel.  The holy host brought the element of surprise and alarm to his mix of utterances.  Zechariah's response was captured in words of "deep emotions."

Is it just me or does the suggestion of deep emotions not evoke the presence of tears?  Face to face with a holy messenger would certainly bring a heart felt wave of emotions, including tears.

Even though Zechariah was a priest, please don't tell me he never cried.  Pastors aren't machines with cold hearts that never cry.  Haven't you ever cried when you were afraid?  Or confused? or bewildered?

Here the man was going into the Silence to pray some of the most heart felt prayers of his life, and before he could get every request out through his simple words, he was face to face with God, the Giver of all words and emotions.

What could have prepared him for that?

"Fear Not!"  "Why do we fear the worst from God, when he loves us completely and always gives us what is best."  ~Liz Curtis Higgs.

And...."why are we so eager to pray away the very life circumstances that teach us the most about who God is?" ~ from my unspoken place.

The angel then proceeds to make a holy delivery of good news, the-once-in-a-life-time-prepare-your-world-to-be-rocked-to-the-core good news.  "Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John." ~ Luke 1:13

Blinking, without words, Zechariah gasps, his very breath is stolen before he could get to his request on the list.  His eyes were brimful of tears by this time, with shock and awe in his heart.  Then the angel goes on to describe all the awesome and life impacting ministry that God would soon birth.

"He will make ready a people prepared for the Lord."  There's that "word" again...prepare....for the Lord's work.

Which brings us back to this ordained time behind the veil.  What is God preparing you to do?  That's the good news of Advent, that God prepares our hearts to receive Him.  Some of you, you need to admit it for the first time, and you know by reading this, that's it's time that you accept Jesus as your Savior.

Let this preparation time in this Christmas season begin with the gift of salvation.  The rest of you...what is God calling you to now?  And how are you preparing your unspoken parts of your heart for more room for the Savior to work during this Christmas season?

And these are the hard life questions that I am also asking myself, those unspoken parts, the exciting parts of where I need God on a daily basis, to undo what has been done to be all that He wants to do, in me and through me.

The season of preparation looks different for each of us.  But might I write a little hope for you?  When you pray for God's wholeness in this season of preparation, give Him room to work His wholeness in this Christmas season.

God want's to do some incredible preparations through your undoing, your broken relationships, your messes, the whatever need in your life that will speak to the unspoken parts of someone else.  God is a God of His words and He holds our hearts.

He is the Hope for the broken world we are in the middle of.

God has heard your prayers, He has not tarried in answering them.  In this time of advent, as we prepare for the celebration of the Savior's birth, may we all gather in our prayers, our hearts, our tears, and our belief in the miracle of Christmas.  In the miracle of the birth of Christ as a tiny baby, who came to earth as a gift of God's grace, to bring a hope and healing to our hearts and our hurts, to our lives.

God promises hope in this time of preparation.  Receive it with graceful silence and awestruck wonder.

Let Heaven and nature sing...

My prayer:  Oh God, helps us see the wonder of your miracle birth, Jesus, in this time of preparation, to bring hope alive in our hearts and hurts, again.  Remind us of the wonderful story of your Words.  And in the silent nights, the lonely hours, the dark times of our problems, God may you meet us here with the hope of Jesus.  Each and every time.  Today.  Tomorrow, and for all eternity. Lord, Jesus come.

Let Heaven and nature sing in our broken and unspoken places.

Five Minute Friday {Dance}

Dancing in the Desert

God has taught me some vital moves.

Moves that I need to survive this journey through the desert.

In one word, He has taught me to trust.  Completely.

There have been some personal struggles that I have overcome.

I am still working through some too.

I have hope and will cling to His promises that I find daily when I read His word.

Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Ps. 62:8

Faith endures and what He has given me has proven to be enough.

This desert journey has been one of tears, fears, and cheers.

Full of joy, sorrow, suffering, rich in healing, comfort and grace.

Loads of trials and victories too, riddled with conflicts and tension, triumphs, hardships, trouble.

Many understandings that have protected and prevented mistakes.

God's mercy has brought me to His side.
His perfect trust teaches me to dance in this desert.

Five Minute Friday {Prayer}

Prayer is our language to God.
Prayer is power.  Prayer is worship.
God honors our prayers.
He loves the bold ones, the timid ones, the soft and the loud.
He hears the quiet stillness of our hearts when we lean in to hear Him.
He strains to hear our words of praise.
Our first step of faith is received in a prayer.
He loves to tell us His whispers.  He longs for us to wait for His timing.
He loves to hold our dreams tight until he deems them right.
He wants our desperate hearts.  He hears our tears and fears.
In prayer, we can let go and let Him grow. He plants passion within our prayers to inspire us.
Bold prayers honor God.  He loves to draw us near; he loves to keep us in His grip.
Prayer reveals His truth in our hearts.
Prayer does not prepare us for the battle; prayer is the battle.
"We take for granted prayer is the preparation for work, whereas prayer is the work."  Oswald Chambers
Take a look in God's word..it's loaded with prayers of those who talked with God.

"Give Me Your Little"

A Tiny Mustard Seed
Here's a glimpse behind the radio DJ curtain.  My life is very messy medically right now in the middle of this faith journey.  And in saying that I know there are people who are suffering way more than I can imagine.  I am not complaining...but in our family, for years, medical situations are my portion.

Today my husband goes into his tenth surgery in seventeen years.  You may not know that he is cancer survivor.  God is good and has brought him through a small army of medical issues.  But still today there are problems with health and quality of life.  It has been a long, hard and complicated trust walk, but I sit here today to tell you I am blessed.

We continue to have problems yes, with most of the details of this life, but that just gives me reassurance that I will need God and I have His promise of my faith in the unseen things at work will be more than enough.

The more of God's portions that I am allowed to endure the more I enjoy one on one fellowship with our Creator.

The more I understand that God is at work with each pain and pill, the less I rely on my own understanding.  My life verse when this all hit our lives is ...

Proverbs 3: 5- 6  "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight."

When things don't make sense, like cancer, surgery after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, year after year of pains, and watching the health of a loved one decline, then I have have to acknowledge that this is my portion from God, and through it all He directs and protects, as I trust Him all the more.

The more I cling to Him the less of a grip I have on my own strength.  God tells me constantly to be brave.

My husband has a "white book" in which he writes all the important decisions that need to be made, "if anything were to ever happen to him", in other words if he meets Jesus before me.  He updates it usually every time he has to go under the knife.  The other day he updated it and as I read it, I fell apart.  As my heart-felt tears streamed down my face.....these words escaped.....

God I can't do this alone...I whispered

"Do you trust me still?  I am in control.  I want you to be brave."

I can't be brave anymore.  I my faith is so small.

"I will give you more..."

As I was face to face with my own mortality and that of my husband, God was challenging me to give Him more of my trust.  I felt so small and weak at that moment of surrender.

"I am enough.  I am your portion.  Look to me...You are not alone.  Give me your little.  I will make more." Again I have all I need.  A little bit of faith is all it takes to be brave once again.

That's when peace hit my heart.

That's all I have God... just a little.  My tear-soaked hands held my heavy heart as I sighed "I do" once again.

God's peace, His rest, His perfect will are enough.  Thank you all for your prayers.  It means so much and I can feel them.  I know God is with us always and He will not forsake His own.  I have the tiny faith in the One who carries our hearts.

What tough time are you dealing with?  How can I pray for you?

I Couldn't Find Lamentations!

The other day I had trouble finding the book of Lamentations.  I woke up at my normal time and did my studies.  But on this day, there was trouble brewing in my soul.  I had just written three pages of confession in my spiral bound journal and ashamedly so…those words were not pretty.  They spewed doubt, resentment, uncertainty, pity, unworthiness, misguided direction, uncomfortable dark thoughts.  I have bad thought days.

I reached out to my mentor and she texted back "Lamentations 3:22- 24."  I then proceeded to have an emotional meltdown as I frantically flipped through the thin pages to find truth.  I couldn't find the verses.  I had to resort to the Table of Contents.  Honestly, I couldn't even see the page numbers because of the free flowing tears.

On page 698 in my Bible, my aching soul was calmed with this:

"Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail, they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.  I say to myself, "The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him."

My heart had been wounded and I needed a touch from God.  Usually when my faith guard is down, the quiet giant lies waiting to wage war within.  I was engaged in a bout with doubt like I had never experienced.  The results had left me sickened and stunned.

I tend to believe lies over truth.
I tend to hear the voice of the enemy over Righteousness.
I tend to cling to visual affirmations
I default to control and perfection.
I seek validation from peers.

On really bad days, sometimes you can't see God's words clearly.  That's why I am thankful that I reached out to my early morning texting friend who knew just what to send.  God moved circumstances to bring His truth to light and to bring transformation.  God’s truth can turn your perspective around in a heartbeat.  I know once again that am not alone as His flawed child determined to banish old habits. My journey is part of a holy refinement process that gives me the strength to move forward in hope knowing that God will be glorified.  And I know where the book of Lamentations is now.

God didn't call us to discipleship alone, nor did He leave us out here in our desert moments to fix ourselves.  What He does call us to is to be faithful as He is faithful.  He wants us to receive His love, and not be consumed with the things of this world.  He is not going to run out of compassion towards us.  In fact He has a brand new fresh load of awesomeness ready for us each day.  And every day as His Spirit is transforming ours, we need to be patient with Him to complete His great work in us.  We need to wait on God in the same way He compassionately and faithfully waits on us to seek Him and allow Him to change us.
Yes, Lord...this is my portion.  Transform me.

What's one habit you want God to change in you?

Heart to Heart

God and I ....we've had some dangerous conversations lately, honestly...they have been a little challenging.  God is changing my perspective about things.  I see that as a good thing.  God is illuminating my next steps, only inches at a time and I will tenderly tip-toe through with courage.  I am such a messy piece, He knows I can't handle the big view.  The task He has called me to is daunting and overwhelming.  I can only think about it a few words at a time.

God is doing a work in me that is not possible
when I'm living in my comfort zone.

I'm ready to accept God's challenge.  I can remember a time when I wasn't.

I am ready to put some muscle to it.  To give it some sweat, a lot of tears, let my little heart bleed.

I know it will be hard work, I will wrestle with it.  Trying not to be afraid of it.

There will be some easy parts and some hard turns.  Some thick and thin places.  Inevitable twists.

I will have to sacrifice, set aside, and dedicate.  I will need discipline.  This is not the time for lack of faith.

I'm sure there will be failures, mistakes, errors.  But those refine and define.

But...mostly there will be a long obedience in the right direction with His goal in mind.  Obedience is what God requires of me.

As my humble heart meets His ...I am ready.

I will follow.  Finally.  Surprise me God.

Has God asked you to do something hard?
